I have been a clinical social worker for the past 20 years.  I have worked in a range of private, public and academic roles across many fields of practice.  Sessional fees will vary depending on eligibility for rebates and subsidies.  Some of the available subsidies and rebates include Dept Vetran Affairs, Medicare under a Mental Health Care Plans, National Disability Insurance Scheme and Private Health Insurers. What is a Medicare Mental health Care Plan?

A Medicare Mental Health Care Plan provides better access to psychiatrists, psychologists, and Mental Health Social Workers in order to improve outcomes for those diagnosed with mental health disorders.

Medicare rebates are available to patients who have a referral for a Mental Health Care Plan from their GP, paediatrician or psychiatrists.  Rebates are available for up to ten individual services per year.

Keep in mind that health professionals still determine their own fees for patients with mental health disorders for Medicare rebate-able allied health services.  This means that charges in excess of the rebate may be required.  This is called a gap and is paid by the patient to the mental health practitioner.
